The difference comes in the quality of the MDF more-so than its thickness. Also important are the quality of the craftsmanship and of the other materials used, particularly those used for sealing joints.
Chinese MDF is little better than dry-rotted wood. Screwing into it is akin to screwing into pressed sawdust.
