Kelso,Wa-Obcon Sub Bass wants to open up a dialog in the car audio industry about the false assertion that speaker enclosures imported from China can be described as using real MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard wood materials.
Dave Kruse, a wood analyst from Plum Creek Timber Company states, "at best the wood coming from China would be described as a low grade of fiber board with a very low bond value. It turns to powder very easily.Density measurements from wood from China read about half compared to the MDF manufactured here in the States."
Obcon asserts it is the woofer manufacturers paying the highest price in this misleading description of wood materials. As it is a well know fact in the industry, an enclosure built with low quality materials and low quality craftsmanship translates into a higher rate of blown sub woofers.
"The sub woofer is in an extremely dangerous environment when mounting screws are consistently vibrating loose and weak enclosure walls give in to the enormous amount of flex generated in any loud pounding system. And the Chinese boxes have both," stated Jason Radcliffe, VP Sales/Marketing Obcon Sub Bass.
In the real world it is impossible to create an acoustically efficient sounding enclosure with zero flex. However, according to Radcliffe, the standard should be much higher than the boxes coming out of China right now. "When a quality sub woofer is mounted in an enclosure built with materials comparable to the consistency of soft dry rotting wood, no one wins," he added.
